Graduation Requirements

Foreign Language Credit Requirements

Undergraduate students must fulfill one of the following criteria for English proficiency requirement and complete the required credits before they are eligible for graduation.
A. English proficiency criteria (for undergraduates who are non-English majors)

1.      Successful completion of level 3 in General English

2.      General English Proficiency Test (GEPT), first stage of the intermediate level

3.      TOEIC score of 550 and above

4.      TOEFL score of ITP 457 and above

5.      TOEFL IBT 47 and above

6.      IELTS scores of 4 

Students who meet the criteria of either GEPT, TOEFL or IELTS should fill in and print the “General English Upgrade Application ” form downloadable from the  Center for Language Education website, and submit this form with a copy of the transcript to the Center for approval.

B. Foreign language credit requirement

ØApplicable to students enrolled before Academic Year 2013 (not including students enrolling in Academic Year 2013)

uFour-year undergraduates should complete 12 credits of foreign language courses, 8 of which should be in one specific language.

uTwo-year undergraduates should complete 6 credits of foreign language courses, 4 of which should be in one specific language

ØApplicable to students enrolled after  Academic Year 2013    

uFour-year undergraduates should complete 8 credits of foreign language courses, of which 4 should be for one specific language.

uTwo-year undergraduates should complete 4 credits of foreign language courses.

C. Course Requirements

1. General Foreign Language

(1). General English courses should be taken in sequential order

Note:

a. General English should be taken in order of levels 1,2, and 3,  and prior to taking a second foreign language (General Japanese & General German).

b. Students can take only take no more than 2 foreign language courses in one semester.

  General English 1A, 2A & 3Acourses are offered in the first semester, and 1B, 2B & 3B courses are offered in the second semester.

※  For courses of the same level, students may take parts  A andB in any order.

※  Students have to complete both parts A and B of a level before they progress to forta higher level.

     

(2). General Japanese

a. General Japanese 1, 3, 5, 7 are offered in the first semester, and 2, 4, 6, 8 are offered in the second semester.

b.  Students can select an entry-level course and receive credits in subsequent study only for higher-level courses.

(3). General German

a. General German 1, 3, 5 are offered in the first semester, and 2, 4, 6 are offered in the second semester.

b. Students can select an entry-level course and receive credits in subsequent study only for higher-level courses.

2. Course Requirements for students of the Department of English

Students of the Department of English can only choose General Japanese or General German as their second foreign language.

3. Course Requirements for students of the Department of Japanese

Students of the Department of Japanese can only choose General English or General German as their second foreign language.

4. Course Requirements for students of the Department of German

Students of the Department of German can only choose General English or General Japanese as their second foreign language.
